Too Busy to Hire? That’s Exactly Why You Should

If you're running a small business, you already know the feeling: buried under client work, team check-ins, and a to-do list that grows faster than your revenue.

You need help, but the thought of hiring feels like one more thing you don’t have time for.

Here’s the truth: waiting for the “right time” to hire is what’s keeping you stuck. You don’t need more time.  Qou need the right person to help you take some of it back.

1. Shift the Question: It's Not “Do I Have Time to Hire?”  It's “Who Will Buy My Time Back?”

Hiring isn't an extra task, it's a strategy. It’s how you reclaim time, energy, and clarity. If you wait for space to appear in your schedule, it never will. You have to create it by choosing to bring someone in now.

“Don't ask, Do I have time to hire?... Instead, ask, Who can I bring on that will give me back time?

One of my favorite books, that inspired this question is  Buy Back Your Time by Dan Martell.

Try a mindset shift exercise: list 5 tasks you shouldn't be doing. If someone else handled just those, how much time would that give back? That’s your first hiring clue.

2. Don’t Wait for the “Perfect Hire.” Prepare for the Right One

Stop chasing the unicorn. You don’t need a perfect résumé.  You need someone who solves the right problem. Start by identifying what’s stealing your time and energy today.

“You need a clear picture of the problem you’re trying to solve… that’s your job description.”

Brain dump all the tasks that keep you in the weeds. Organize them into categories (admin, client delivery, follow-up). This list = your job post outline.

3. Block Time for This—Even If It Feels Impossible

Hiring doesn’t require weeks of prep. It requires three focused hours. That’s it. One intentional time block can get your momentum started and remove the mental weight.

“Block off just three hours... clarify the role, post a position, and decide how you’ll vet people, simply.”

Use a voice note app to record your job description on the go, then delegate the posting to your VA or assistant.

4. Plan the First 30 Days—Loosely

One of the biggest hiring delays happens because we don’t know what to do with the new person once they start. You don’t need a corporate playbook. Just start with a bullet list.

“Even if it’s just a bullet list of what they’ll shadow and learn and start to own.  That’s enough.”

Create 3 buckets: “Shadow,” “Support,” and “Own.” Assign tasks for week 1, 2, and 3. You’ll build the rest as you go.

5. Hiring Isn’t a Detour—It Is the Road

Think hiring is a distraction from the “real” work? Flip the script: it’s actually the first domino in a better future. Your time, your sanity, and your impact grow when you stop being the bottleneck.

“Hiring isn’t a detour. It’s the main road to the future you want.”

Visualize your future self after a successful hire. What’s different? What are you finally able to focus on? That clarity will fuel your action today.

  • What would change if you trusted your team more, and they earned it?

  • How long can you keep running your business at 110% without burning out?

  • What kind of leader do you want to be in 12 months?
    • What help would that version of you have already hired?

Hiring isn’t just a business move. It’s a leadership decision.   A reclaiming of your time, energy, and vision.

5 Simple Steps to Start Hiring in the Chaos

  1. Mindset Shift: Ask “Who will buy back my time?” instead of “Do I have time to hire?”

  2. List the Bottlenecks: Write down what keeps you stuck. That’s your job description.

  3. Block 3 Hours: Time-box the hiring process. That’s all it takes to move forward.

  4. Sketch the First 30 Days: Bullet out what they’ll shadow, support, and eventually own.

  5. Start Messy: Post it. Talk to candidates. Iterate later.

You don’t need to keep holding everything together on your own. The overwhelmed version of you is doing their best, but the empowered CEO version? They started hiring, even when it felt messy.

That future starts now.
